There are not enough seats in the reading-room in our school. Just because of this, I had a very special experience that I shall never forget.

One day, I was annoyed ① by the hot weather. After drinking a bottle of water, I ran fast towards the reading-room.When I pushed the door open, I saw what I expected. There was no empty seat. I looked very carefully at every corner, hoping to find one, but it seemed hopeless. Suddenly I caught sight of an empty seat with a book on it. I knew it must have been “occupied②”by someone, but I was eager to sit down to have a rest after running. So I put the book on the other side of the table, and sat down.

About 10 minutes later, I heard a very low voice behind me. “Excuse me,我还记得那个万圣节(I Still Remember That Hallowee, sister. I"m afraid that this seat is mine.”“What? It"s yours? How can you say that?” The little girl seemed a little nervous. “I remember I put my book on this desk before lunch,构建和谐社会(Building a harmonious society),”she said. “Please don"t draw a conclusion so quickly before you have enough evidence ③! ”I said in a loud voice. It made nearly everyone in the room turn their heads towards me. I felt a little embarrassed.Just then, a student next to me said,“To tell the truth, this seat is really the little girl"s. I think you should give it to her.” My face turned red at once. I can"t describe how I felt at that moment, and I don"t remember how I went out of the room with my books before so many eyes.

This happened 4 years ago. Since then I have often asked myself if I have done anything without considering other people"s rights.

The Fragrant Hills Park, about 30 kilometres northwest of Beijing,(No Cellphones in the C, is one of the most favourite resorts in the city"s outskirts. It covers an area of 160 hectares.

In 1186, in the Jin Dynasty, the Fragrant Hills Temple was built and terraces, pavilions and pagodas were added by the subsequent dynasties. The area was later converted into a park and was named the Park of Tranquility and Pleasure.

Along with Yuanmingyuan and the Surmmer Palace, the park was twice destroyed in 1860 and in 1900. The destruction was so serious that the reconstruction efforts made in the later years were never able to restore its original scale and splendour. After 1949, large-scale restoration took place and now the Fragrant Hills Park is a pop- ular place in late autumn for holiday-makers when the maple leaves redden. The brilliant foliage is the main attraction. No one is sure where the sumac trees originated. Legend has it that a south wind carried the seeds of the red-leaf trees to Beijing. Then the seeds survived, and as years passed they grew into a lovely forest. Another story goes that the sumacs were transplanted to the area by Emperor Qianlong (l736-l795) of the Qing Dynasty. In November, the frosted leaves of these trees, along with the persimmons and maples, spread over the Fragrant Hills like a thick red blanket. For two centuries, it has been a resort for the residents in Beijing.

Major places of interest in the park include:

  Spectacles Lake

Built in l745, the Spectacles Lake actually consists of two ponds separated and spanned by a stone bridge. When the water reflects the sunlight, the twin lakes resemble a pair of spectacles, hence the name. On the shore is a small stone cave with a spring above it. The water drips down over the entrance of the cave, The Power of actions, forming a water screen that freezes into icicles in winter.

  Studio of Tranquil Heart

It was first built in mid-16th century under the Ming and was reconstructed in the Qing period. In the enclosure there is a large semi-circular pool in the shape of a heart. The studio was burned down in 1860 and was renovated after 1949.

  Bright Temple

Lying to the south of the Studio of Tranquil Heart, the Bright Temple was built in 1780 as a residence for the Sixth Bainqen Erdeni when he visited Beijing. The compound has a 10-metre-high red terrace in Tibetan style. It was destroyed by the Anglo-French troops in 1860.

Gulangyu is an island separated from Xiamen city proper. It"s like a garden on the water. The shade of the trees covers nearly the whole island. Cars, buses, bikes are not allowed to drive there. Everyone should walk. This makes the place very quiet so that music played by the violin or the piano can be heard here and there. It is the famous "Home of Music".

The Sunshine Rock is the highest place on the island, so it has become the symbol of Gulangyu. Standing at the top of the Sunshine Rock, one can see the landscape of the whole Xiamen ands other small islands. The sky and the sea meet on the horizon. It"s said that people can see clearly the Jinmen Island through telescope when the sun is shining. There are gentle waves on the sea and lots of people are swimming. At the foot of the Sunshine Rock is Shuzhang Garden with its picturesque scenery. The Forty-four Bridge spans over the water like a white dragon. What a beautiful picture!

By the time children enter school, they’ll have spent up to one-third of their waking hours in front of TV. The enormous influence of television is just beginning to be realized. While many parents take television as an electronic baby-sitter, they neglect the fact that television may be more harmful than it is beneficial to children.

Those who encourage small children to watch television claim that many programs for children on TV are helpful to develop children’s interest and enrich their knowledge. They also argue that preoccupied with TV programs, children are prevented from doing mischief. Although at a first glance these arguments sound true, the behavior of some children doesn’t seem to prove them.

In the first place, programs for children are not always beneficial to them. One science fiction serial keeps telling about some supernatural beings who can fly and always fight against evildoers. After watching several episodes, a small child was so enchanted that he imitated the heroes and “flew” from his room on the second floor. There are also reports of children running away from home to the mountains to practice martial art. These incidents are naturally credited with TV programs for children.

Further, being preoccupied with TV programs is not a good way for avoiding mischief. In the days before TV, parents used to gather together with their children, telling stories or reading poems to them. The communication between parents and children was thus better, so it was easier for children to understand what was good conduct. Those who approve of children’s watching TV neglect television’s bad effects on children. Firstly, children are surrounded and bombarded by commercials for toys and foods. They are tempted into becoming consumers. They earnestly ask their parents to buy things which they do not really need. As a result, the parents are in a financial dilemma, and the children themselves always become victims of bad products because of false advertising.

Another bad effect of television is that children are over-exposed to violence. They watch hours of murders, fights, and crimes every week, with no adult around to tell them that life is not like that most of the time. The effect of the heavy dose of violence is to suggest to children that violence is an ordinary way of life, and that shooting and cheating are ways to success. Most serious of all, children who often watch TV are becoming passive. They just sit back and let things happen to them. Children are inventive; they have the ability to imagine a whole world of their own. But what happens when their imagination is not needed, when TV does all the imagination for them? Obviously, these children are not going to grow up as inventive and imaginative as their parents, for they have been robbed of creative impulses by television.

To sum up, children’s indulgence in television is harmful. The problem, nevertheless, is not one of prohibition. Parents should supervise and guide their children’s watching TV instead of parking them in front of the tube, hoping it will act as a baby-sitter.

There are many ways of traveling, People may travel by plane if they want to travel far and reach their destination in a shorter time. It is the most comfortable but expensive way. Most people travel by train because it is a less expensive way but the compartments are cramped and stuffy.

Bus journey is a cheaper way but it is spent on narrow, bumpy roads which are crowded with traffic. Trips by ship may be the cheapest and most comfortable way but it takes too much time.

I tike traveling by bike. I can set out when I like and stop when I like. I can go wherever I like so that I can enjoy delightful spots rarely visited by other travelers. When I feel tired,什么是成功(What Is Success), I sit down by the bike and have a good rest. Besides, I can save much money for tickets and much time in waiting for the train or bus. 篇10 英语高考作文

In the past, my hometown used to be a beautifulplace. It was surrounded by plenty of trees andcovered with green grass everywhere. Later, peopledestroyed many trees to turn for its into farmlandand a lot of water and soil was carried away down thehills. Thus, much farmland has became waste land. What"s worst, this waste land is increasingand our village is suffering from storms. I think it"s time for us to realize the importance ofprotecting the environment and to do something about it, such as planting trees, growinggrass and so on. I am sure that our hometown will become beautiful again in the fewyears time if we do so.
